She was born in Beijing, China in 1969, during the rising of a red moon. Her parents named her "Chan," which means to rise, and "Hon" which means red, a colour that traditionally signifies health and prosperity. It is a name that is fitting, given her quick rise to fame and good fortune. Chan Hon Goh has had a glittering, fairy-tale career as a ballerina since joining the National Ballet of Canada in 1988. Her quick ascension within the company landed her the prestigious title of Principal Dancer in 1994--the first of Chinese descent.
A 2005 recipient of the New Pioneers Arts Award, Ms. Goh's invaluable contributions to the cultural and artistic tapestry of Canada will be seen once again on a familiar stage. The upcoming gala presentation of A Chinese New Year Celebration with Chan Hon Goh, will be held on January 31, 2009 in the P.C. Ho Theatre at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto (CCCGT).
"The message of what the cultural centre offers in the community is important," says Ms. Goh. It is a meeting place, a place for inspiration, and where the west meets the east."
Established in 1988, the CCCGT is an integral part of the Scarborough community in east Toronto, actively promoting and fostering Chinese culture. It is one of the most technologically advanced cultural centres in North America, offering a variety of activities each year.
A Chinese New Year Celebration will attract over 600 entertainment enthusiasts to the 23,000 square foot venue. The show serves as a "gateway for people to garner enthusiasm to see full productions that are normally two hours long," says Ms. Goh, co-producer and a performer in the show. "It's important that dance is accessible to everyone and goes into the community."
This will be Ms. Goh's third show at the Cultural Centre. As the creative head, she has gathered exceptional talent, selected stimulating repertoire, and configured all of the onstage logistics, making this "a top-notch" show.
"I'm very appreciative of all the participants and their hard work," says Ms. Goh. "They too see it as a cultural community event."
This year's fundraising gala production is sponsored by Rolex. Ms. Goh is the official Canadian Ambassador and representative of its brand-lasting, precision, trust, and quality-a brand similar to the essence of who she is.
